Ideally located in the Auvergne, in the Livradois-Forez Regional Nature Park at the gateway to the Rhône-Alpes region, Ambert invites you to a gourmet and festive experience.
Its famous “Fourme d’Ambert”, an internationally renowned blue-veined cheese, is the pride of its inhabitants and the delight of all gourmets. Festivities brighten up the summer season too: Ambert côté jardin and the wine fair (in April), L’Art dans la Rue and the festival La Ronde des Copains du Monde (in July), the Fourmofolies and the festival of La Chaise-Dieu (in August).
Sportsmen and nature lovers are well catered for: Ambertrail (in May), Rand’Auvergne (in June), the Cyclo sportive Les Copains (in July). Swimming, hiking (200 km of marked trails snake around the town along with 350 km of mountain bike trails), tourist aviation, microlights, skiing and snowshoeing complete the offer.
A town full of nature in a green setting, classified as a “two-flower town in bloom”, a town of fairs and markets, Ambert has an elegant and very varied architectural heritage: the historic centre boasts half-timbered houses, thermal baths, Art Nouveau villas, private mansions, and Gothic church with a Renaissance bell tower.
In addition to the invitation to stroll through the historic centre, Ambert asserts its uniqueness and offers many discoveries, with themed tours of the town, the Maison de la Fourme, the Manufacture d’Images, MUS’ENERGIE, the Trains of Discovery and the Moulin Richard de Bas (a mill), an emblematic representative of the paper-making tradition that is part of a more contemporary approach to cultural transmission through the written word.
Gastronomic delights: Fourme d’Ambert cheese and its specialities, cold meats, blueberries, mountain honeys and other local products are available at the market every Thursday morning.
