Written at the beginning of the eighteenth century in Venice, Monteverdi's L'Orfeo is widely acknowledged to be the first modern opera to have emerged from of the great madrigal tradition, and to be the precursor of a new art. L'Orfeo is also, and above all, a masterpiece that spans the centuries and continues to touch people profoundly, in their relationship with loss, hope and love. Stéphane Fuget and his marvellous ensemble Les Épopées interpret this music in all its warmth, emotion and dramatic power.
